There were lots of great classes and workshops at this year’s fair. I made pillows at the sewing station, did tool sharpening with two experts, learned how to make tortillas, toothpaste, deodorant and more! This was the third year and classes were held at Meadowbrook and Ravenna Eckstein community centers. It’s rare to have so much expertise in one area and all for a cost of just 15 dollars.
Here’s what I learned about tool sharpening:
It’s great to have a variety of files, sharpening stones and a vise for holding the tool to be sharpened.
First find the bevel on the tool to be sharpened then run a file down the beveled side to create a slight bur that can be felt when you run your finger down on the flat side. Use the file to smooth the bur from the flat side. Do this a couple of times until you have a good edge on your tool.
For knives and scissors you can also use a sharpening stone. Here’s a video with more info. Happy sharpening!
I'd love to hear from you!
