Urban Farm Hub is launching a weekly spotlight series to celebrate the amazing people who spend their days creating a healthier, more sustainable local food system. Last week we highlighted the community organizing work of Cathy Tuttle. This week we’d like to celebrate the transformational work of Ray Schutte, who keeps himself busy as the President of the P-Patch Trust.
So how did you get involved in the local food movement?
It’s a natural outgrowth of my involvement with the P-Patch Trust. The Trust is an advocate for organic community gardens and it values sustainable activities, which include local food. I also really like to eat good food, and the fresher the better!
If you could bring only one pack of seeds on a long trip, what would they be?
Beans, you could eat them if you did not find time to plant them.
If you could change just one thing about the food system…
I would give tax incentives to local organic growers.
What do you think about the adage “It’s not the food we eat; it’s our eating habits”?
Ha! The quality of food is not a disorder or eating habit. For example, cows that eat grass, don’t require antibiotics and don’t breed e coli.
Speaking of eating habits, what’s your vision of the perfect meal?
There are many perfect meals, but all have in common fresh local garden greens tossed with various root vegetables and seasoned with a little garlic.
If you were a goat, what phrase would be on the tip of your tongue?
“The fresh local garden greens would be delightful–I’d like to challenge Ray Schutte to get to the spring dandelions before I do.”
I'd love to hear from you!
